21 December 2019 – Philippine Ambassador H.E. Ramon S. Bagatsing, Jr. together with DFA ASPAC Assistant Secretary Mr. Meynardo LB. Montealegre paid an official visit to Bhutan on 17 to 21 December 2019 to discuss with the relevant Bhutanese Officials on the Philippine Government’s proposal the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Bhutan.
On 18 December 2019, the Philippine delegation called on Bhutanese Foreign Minister Lyonpo (Dr.) Tandi Dorji. From 19 to 20 December 2019, the Philippine delegation held meetings with Foreign Secretary Kinga Singye, Bilateral Affairs Director Mr. Sonam Tobgay, Royal Civil Service Commissioner Dhanapati Mishra, Ministry of Labour and Human Resources Secretary Sonam Wangchuk.
In the past decade, the Philippines and Bhutan have been engaged in exchanges of visits and cooperation in the fields of culture, education and training, despite absence of formal bilateral relations. The Philippines is looking forward to enter into full diplomatic relations with Bhutan and said meetings is part of the roadmap for the establishment of formal ties between the Philippines and Bhutan in the next coming years.
