29 April 2018 – The Philippine Embassy with the assistance of the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Chennai conducted a consular outreach and gender and development (GAD) activity in Chennai.
The consular outreach activity was held at the Philippine Honorary Consulate General where 43 applied for the renewal of their passport. The outreach activity also served as an opportunity for other Filipinos to consult with Embassy and Consulate officials on their concerns related to other consular services of the Embassy such as registration of birth, marriage and death, visa applications and assistance to nationals (ATN). Passport renewal applicants also included Filipinos from Bangalore and Kerala, which are several hours away by land travel to Chennai. During the outreach, 32 Filipinos registered as overseas voters.
Taking advantage of the rare opportunity to meet the Filipinos in Chennai, the Philippine Embassy, with the assistance of the Honorary Consulate General, organized an interactive session with Filipinos in Chennai, which provided an opportunity for the Embassy to listen to the concerns of the Filipino community, to share recent developments in the Philippines, to update them on Embassy programs, introduction of new Embassy personnel and most importantly, to conduct a GAD activity. The GAD activity included a presentation/discussion by the Embassy on women empowerment, Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) law of the Philippines and featured several accomplished Filipino women. After the presentation by the Embassy a Question and Answer on Filipino women achievers was conducted and simple prizes were awarded to members of the Filipino community who were able to provide the correct answer to the questions.
