06 October 2016- The Philippine Embassy in New Delhi visited the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad, India on 03 October 2016.
Established in 1987, LVPEI is a not-for -profit, non-government eye care institution, considered as third best eye hospital in India. LVPEI has served over 21.3 million people with eye problems since its establishment, with more than50% of its servicesprovided free of cost, regardless of complexity. It is also a World Health Organization (WHO) Centre for the Prevention of Blindness and a Global Resource Centre for VISION 2020.
LVPEI is the largest provider of sight restoring corneas in India. It has a SightLife Center of Excellence in Eye Banking called the Ramayamma International Eye Bank (RIEB) that offers trainings in the planning of eye banking services, policy making in eye banking and eye banking techniques for eye bank professionals from Indiaand other countries.
Ambassador Ma. Teresita C. Daza, her spouse Mr. David Jose Daza, Economic Assistant Ms. Meri Jayne Cruz-Cinco, and representatives from PHCG Chennai, met with Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, founder and Chairman of LVPEI and the other key officials of LVPEI who briefed them about the Institute with its key values of excellence, equity, and effectiveness. The Embassy team were also informed about LVPEI’s educational training programs as well as various initiatives including the “Vision Rehabilitation” which aims to empower people with acute vision loss; the “Srujana Centre for Innovation” which is currently focusing on generating disruptive ideas for screening refractive errors, visual fields in children, eye problems in diabetics and eye responses in cases of neurological diseases; as well as the “Public Health and Rural Outreach.” Out of the 107 locations that LVPEI currently operates from, 89 of them are primary eye care centres located in remote villages. LVPEI has over 500 employees including doctors, scientists, researchers, specialists. It serves at least 1,200 patients and around 120 eye surgeries daily. END
